The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
