Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
