Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
