A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
